Hadrian’s Wall began here on the banks of the River Tyne in AD122. The Walk traces the route of the Wall through the city and acknowledges the significance of the Romans in putting the area of Newcastle on the world map. 

The Great North Museum

Roman material in the Great North Museum includes a group of carved and inscribed stones from Hadrian’s Wall and its outpost forts and hinterland sites, which are critical for the study of Roman Britain and Roman military history. These comprise of altars, building inscriptions and tombstones, as well as relief sculptures. In addition there are many important examples of Roman material culture, including pottery, jewellery, armour, weapons and domestic items.
