Our Vision

Our vision is to inspire all through the preservation of history.

What We Stand For

The Vindolanda Charitable Trust's vision is to excavate and preserve the Roman remains in the Trust's ownership in the central sector of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. Its original objective was to administer the Vindolanda Roman Fort and its museum, but only two years after its founding in 1970 the Trust acquired the 'sister' Roman site of Magna, 15 minutes from Vindolanda and now administers the established Roman Army Museum tourist attraction next to Magna.

The Trust is committed to a twinned robust scholastic and visitor programme encompassing:

  • Research
  • Education
  • Public display and enjoyment of its monuments and finds from the Vindolanda excavations

The Trust encourages people of all ages and abilities to enrich their present and future by learning from the past. Our passion at the Trust is to preserve and share the gift of history. Our sites are not conceived as tourist attractions, they are places people can come and actively participate in historical and archaeological research.

Help Us Continue Our Work

The Vindolanda Trust is a totally independent charity that can only continue to excavate, conserve, research and educate with the money it raises from visitors to Vindolanda Roman and the Roman Army Museum. The income comes from entrance fees, from our friendship scheme and from our guests spending in our shops and cafes. When you have visited us, you will see that your money is going directly to a good cause. The Trust does not receive annual income from any other source so if you would like to help us preserve the past for future generations to learn and enjoy please visit us regularly, make a donation or join as a Friend of Vindolanda.
