When are you open?

Roman Army Museum & Roman Vindolanda Fort & Museum  From Sunday 27th March both museums are open daily from 10am until 6pm (last admission 5pm).

How much does it cost to visit?

The table below shows our standard ticket prices for 2022. The SAVER Ticket gives one visit to both Roman Vindolanda Fort & Museum and the Roman Army Museum - you don't have to visit both attractions on the same day.

Child: aged 5-18 (if in full time education).

Students: aged 18+ (please bring your student ID card with you).

Seniors: aged 60+

Family: 2 adults and up to 3 children.

Are Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum at the same site?

No - our two museums are 7 miles apart.  We recommend allowing 1.5 hours at the Roman Army Museum and 2+ hours at Vindolanda. When planning your day allow for a 15 minute travel time between the two sites (by car).

What is an arrival window?

We ask our visitors to select an arrival window. These are two hour windows which give you flexibility on your anticipated arrival time. The arrival windows are 10am-12noon, 12noon-2pm, 2pm-4pm. Our last arrival window will be extended in the summer months to 5pm when the sites are open later.

Arrival windows help us manage the flow of visitors to our sites. 

On high demand scheduled event weekends the arrival windows will be hourly.

From 29th August onwards we will not longer have arrival windows.  You can arrive whenever you like within our normal opening times - there will be no requirement to book a specific time in advance.

How many arrival windows should I book?

You need to book an arrival window for each person who has a ticket. This includes existing ticket holders.

Under 5's do not need a slot and are admitted free.

Can I arrive without booking?

We are operating at reduced capacity and have established a system of arrival windows. You may arrive at our sites without booking an arrival window, however you run the risk of being turned away if we have reached our capacity and are fully booked. 

We strongly recommend booking an arrival window.

How do I book if I am already a Friend of Vindolanda, have a ticket, or I am eligible for a free ticket?

If you are already a Friend of Vindolanda or have a  Golden Ticket you still need to book an arrival window. Please select the existing ticket holder option when you book. Please bring your existing ticket/card with you to show our staff when you arrive.

If you are eligible for free entry (carers) you can select the free ticket option.

I'm coming with friends/family members who don't want to see the museum(s), can they just use the cafe & toilets?

All of our museum facilities such as the cafe, shop and toilets are for ticket holders only. Everyone who uses those facilities must have an admission ticket. 

With a Saver Ticket do I have to visit both sites on the same day?

You don't have to visit both sites on the same day if you have booked a Saver Ticket. 

I've booked the wrong date/time - Can I change it?

Please contact us to change your arrival time. We can only change your booking to an alternative day/time if there is space.  01434 344277

Do I need to print my booking confirmation/tickets?

No, you don't need to print them. If you have them on your mobile device we can scan the QR code from your phone or tablet. It is however your responsibility to have proof of your ticket purchase or Friends Membership with you to gain entry to the attractions. Please contact us before you visit if you are unable to locate your tickets.

I have booked my tickets but I haven't received a confirmation email.

Please check your junk or spam folders as our website sends the email they can sometimes end up there. If you still are unable to find your confirmation you can email [email protected] and ask for a receipt to be emailed.

How long can I stay?

Once you arrive you may stay in our museums until we close, no matter what time you arrive. The arrival windows are in place to control the flow of people.

Do I need to wear a mask?

We encourage everyone to follow the latest guidance on mask wearing while inside our museums. 

Can I bring my dog?

Only registered assistance dogs are allowed.  We recommend that you leave your pets at home when visiting our sites.

What facilities are open?

All the facilities such as our exhibitions, cafes, toilets and shops at both Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum are open. Our cafes close 1 hour before our museum closing time to enable a full clean to take place. Museum shops close 15 minutes before the main museum closes.

We have decided not to visit, can we get a refund?

Our admission tickets are not refundable. Unredeemed tickets are however valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. If you have purchased tickets and would like to amend your arrival date/time please give us a call/email and we can do that for you (see our contact number at the top of this page). Alternatively you can re-book your free arrival time window as an 'existing ticket holder'.

What are the rules on photography?

Taking photographs is allowed within our museum but flash photography and the use of tripods is prohibited.

We do not allow drones at our sites.
