Vindolanda Excavation Bursaries

The Vindolanda Trust understands how important it is that young people from all backgrounds have access to archaeology and history. Volunteering on an archaeological excavation is not only great fun, but also a way to learn transferable skills which you will be able to use in further education and in the workplace. To make it easier and more accessible for young people to participate in the Vindolanda Excavations, the Trust offers bursaries places each year.

In 2026, three bursary spaces will be available to participate in the Vindolanda excavations during Period 9: 17th to 28th August.

To be eligible, you need to be between 18 and 25 years of age.

The bursary applications will open on the 1st September and close on the 14th October. Interviews will be held on the 27th October and successful applicants will be notified by the end of October.

The bursary includes:

• Self-Catering accomodation at our residential Hedley Centre, in a single en-suite room
• BAJR archaeological skills passport
• One year Friends of Vindolanda individual membership, giving you unlimited access to both our museums and discounts in the shops
• A welcome pack with some food essentials to start you off
• Packed lunch (Monday to Friday) which you can customise to your dietary needs and pick up every morning
• All benefits of a normal excavation place: Excavation T-shirt, teas, coffees, biscuits and all the archaeological tuition you can dream of!
