2023 Magna Excavations

3rd July 2023 - 22nd September 2023

Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm, weather permitting.

You will be able to visit the site at certain times to learn about the ongoing excavation and see the work in progress. You will be able to join or sign up to these once you arrive at the museum.

A new excavation for 2023 at the Roman fort of Magna part of the Roman Army Museum. This years excavations will take place in the far corner of the northern field at Magna encompassing an area that includes a Hadrian's Wall Milecastle (46) and exploring the vallum and its diversion.The archaeologists and their teams of volunteers will be out Mon - Fri weather permitting. You may ask questions (in fact its encouraged) but please remember to respect the boundaries of the excavations.

The Vindolanda Youth Panel have curated an exhibition at the Roman Army Museum called Questioning Roman Identity. Artefacts from the Vindolanda collection are highlighted which focus on aspects of identity of individuals along the Wall.

Health in the Roman Times Exhibition

Roman Vindolanda Museum
The community group Zigzag Days researched health and disability in Roman times asking the question 'how would I have fared'. The group investigated the 'finds' stores at Vindolanda and developed a great exhibition using Vindolanda's collection of finds.
Festival of the Rose

See the Roman Army Museum decorated with roses to commemorate Rosalia the festival of the rose, an ancient Roman festival particularly special to the Roman soldiers.
