Wear a piece of history
A unique hand crafted pendant made from 2,000 year old oak.
Some of the larger wooden rafts, uncovered during the excavation of the deep anaerobic layers at Vindolanda are not conservable and after carefully recording these pieces they would normally be re-used as part of the backfill of the site.
Now local craftsman David Wayper has been able to create a bespoke range of Vindolanda souvenirs which are made using some of this 2,000 year old oak. All the proceeds from the sale of these items goes directly back to supporting the ongoing excavation programme.
Due to the nature of the wood used pair of earrings are unique and colour may vary slightly depending on the size and condition of the original piece of wood. Each pendant has Davy Wayper's signature engraving of V on the back.
The design of this pendant has been inspired by the discovery of a nail cleaning strap end which was decorated with a hooded Christian figure. This exact illustration is engraved into the wood. The strap end artefact features in Dr Andrew Birley's "Top 10 finds of the decade" blog.
The pendant measures 6pm and comes with a silver snake chain.
