We are offering different opportunities of youth volunteering and short work experiences at Vindolanda, please see information for the Youth Panel and Work Experience below.

Vindolanda Youth Panel

We are looking for young adults aged between 15-25 to get involved with Vindolanda’s small finds collection and to pilot a Vindolanda Youth Panel. The pilot will run over 6-month with the aim to produce one of the following outputs.

  • An online display
  • A display onsite
  • A film or audio guide

The participants can choose which of the above they prefer to do as a team.

When:

The first initial meeting will take place 9th July at Vindolanda 10.00-12.00. The idea is to meet twice a month until January (mix of in person and virtual meetings). The pilot will finish with the launch of the output developed.

 What we offer:

  • Access to look behind the scenes and work with Vindolanda’s unique small finds collection
  • Developing skills such as project planning, time management, exhibition planning and interpretation
  • Meeting experts from the heritage and archaeology sector
  • A certificate outlining skill developed during the project.

What we want from you;

  • Reliability to commit to a project period of 6 month

Behind the scenes at Vindolanda (short work experiences):

We are offering short work placements for GSCE, A-level and University students over school holidays, and the end of term holidays.

To give you a chance to have a look behind the scenes at Vindolanda.

  • Get hands on Vindolanda’s collection help cataloguing artefacts
  • Follow our artefacts from excavation to exhibition
  • Explore Vindolanda site and museum
  • Gain work experience and enhance your CV

 When:

  • Work experience (1st-3rd August/ 10am-3pm): Fully booked
  • Work experience GSCE-Students (18th-19th August/ 10am-3pm): The two days will give you an insight into Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum, you will handle original Roman artefacts, see the Vindolanda stores and visit the fort Magna and explore the impact of climate change on archaeology.
  • Work experience A-level and University Students (22nd-24th August/10am-3pm): The three days will give you an insight into Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, you will help cataloguing objects and get an insight into exhibition planning, interpretation and museums ethics and the impact of climate change to archaeology.
  • Work experience GSCE Students (24th-25th October/10am-3pm): The two days will give you an insight into Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum, you will handle original Roman artefacts, see the Vindolanda stores and visit the fort Magna and explore the impact of climate change on archaeology.
  • Work experience A-level and University Students (26nd-28th October 10am-3pm): The three days will give you an insight into Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, you will help cataloguing objects and get an insight into exhibition planning, interpretation and museums ethics and the impact of climate change to archaeology.

A-level and University Students: please send a statement (<250 words) why you would like to get an insight into the Vindolanda Trust. Applications close 3 weeks before placement.

GSCE Students:  Please send a short introduction to yourself, including what are your strengths and interests (<250 words). Applications close 3 weeks before placement.
