In cooperation with, and thanks to the generous sponsorship of Historic England, the Vindolanda Trust is pleased to offer 10 bursary places for the 2022 excavations, each of the equivalent value of £400, reserved for students aged 16 to 19 and in full time education at (or recently graduated from) one of the following institutions:

William Howard School– Brampton

Haydon Bridge High School – Haydon Bridge

Queen Elizabeth High School - Hexham

The bursary will cover:

  • Excavation fees, including one excavation t-shirt
  • One year of Friends of Vindolanda membership, which allows unlimited free entrance at Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum and offers the bearer discounts in our Museum shops.
  • Lunch vouchers for the value of £85.00, in the form of a £8.50 per day food and drink voucher to be redeemed at the Café facilities at Roman Vindolanda.
  • £75.00 worth of travel expenses, in two tranches of £37.50, handed to the winners on the first and second Monday of participation.

What's involved when excavating?

If you win the bursary, and are under the age of 18, you will not need to be accompanied by an adult on the excavations.

Please note that bursary places will only be available in period 2- from the 11th to the 23rd April 2022 (4 places)-, period 10- from the 1st to the 12th August 2022 (2 places) and period 11- from the 15th to the 26th August 2022 (4 places). Do not forget to indicate your preferred period in this form. If you are a winner, we will try and allocate your period of choice. If you do not choose a period, or the period you prefer is not available, we will contact you to discuss your allocation.

If there are more applicants than spaces, we will create a shortlist, and offer shortlisted candidates a Zoom interview, which will take place between the 1st and 4th MarchAll winners will be notified of their place by the 7th March 2022.
