Our family trails will take you through the Roman Army Museum with questions to answer in each gallery as well as point you to some great artefacts and finds.

Roman Army Survival Guide: Have you got what it takes to join the Roman Army? Find out 5 top tips for surviving your time in the army and see if you can answer the questions in each gallery and end your trip with Flavius Africanus at the recruitment tent and decide whether you would like to sign up! Tell your Roman name to our staff and receive a badge or temporary tattoo to show you have joined the Roman Army!

Roman Army Museum Trail: Learn about the different types of soldiers, see the weapons and armour they would have had to carry, and explore the Wall from above with Aquila the eagle in our Edge of Empire 3D film. Test your knowledge by answering the questions on the trail. Can Flavius Africanus persuade you to join the Roman army at the end of your visit? Take home the trail and colour in all of the soldiers.

While you're here you can also have a lesson with our holographic Roman teacher Velius and watch our 20 minute 3D film about what life was life for a Roman soldier on Hadrian's Wall.

Join us in the Vindolanda Activity Centre to learn about the ancient mouthpiece found at Vindolanda in 2022. Handle the 3D printed replica and hear the sound it might have made.

A new excavation for 2023 at the Roman fort of Magna part of the Roman Army Museum. The archaeologists and their teams of volunteers will be out Mon - Fri weather permitting. See history as it is uncovered.
Questioning Roman Identity Exhibition

February - November 2023

The Vindolanda Youth Panel have curated an exhibition at the Roman Army Museum called Questioning Roman Identity. Artefacts from the Vindolanda collection are highlighted which focus on aspects of identity of individuals along the Wall.
2023 Vindolanda Excavations

Health in the Roman Times Exhibition

11th February - 31st March
Roman Vindolanda Museum
The community group Zigzag Days researched health and disability in Roman times asking the question 'how would I have fared'. The group investigated the 'finds' stores at Vindolanda and developed a great exhibition using Vindolanda's collection of finds.
Festival of the Rose

1 May - 5 June 2023

See the Roman Army Museum decorated with roses to commemorate Rosalia the festival of the rose, an ancient Roman festival particularly special to the Roman soldiers.
