Vindolanda Roman Fort to open daily throughout January 10am until 4pm.

(last admission 3pm)

2020 will be a year of celebration for the Vindolanda Charitable Trust as the charity begins its 50th year.  Since 1st April 1970 the Trust has made remarkable discoveries, uncovered large areas of multiple Roman forts and civilian settlements and become one of the regions most visited tourist attractions.

Normally Vindolanda would close its doors to the public in January and while the Vindolanda museum will be closing for annual maintenance work the Roman fort will remain open with the added bonus of daily introduction tours of the site.  Dr Andrew Birley, CEO of the Trust explained "We are delighted to be able to keep the Vindolanda site open this January.  For those visitors who are prepared to brace the Northumberland weather we will be open with a warm welcome and some fascinating history to share".

From Monday 6th January a special site only admission fee of £5 for adults, £3 for children or a family ticket £13 will apply. A refreshment area is being created in the main West Gate visitor entrance along with a temporary shop. Introduction site tours will take place each day at 11:30am throughout January.

After your January visit you can take advantage of a special discounted afternoon tea offer of £15pp at the beautiful Langley Castle Hotel.  This offer is available during our site only opening period between  6th January until 7th February.  You are required to book your afternoon tea in advance and the offer is subject to availability. Please phone Langley Castle on 01434 688 888 to book and quote "Vindolanda".

The main visitor season when the Vindolanda Museum and the Roman Army Museum re-open for 2020 starts on Saturday 8th February.

In the event of inclement weather conditions, the site may have to close. Please check our website or social media pages prior to visiting. Alternatively give us a call on 01434 344277 to check.
