Learn about Roman Samian Ware pottery, while making your own replica!
During this workshop participants will learn about Roman Samian Ware, arguably the World's first truly mass produced pottery. Much of the decorated Samian Ware produced in Gaul between the first and third centuries AD, was made in moulds, so you will begin by making a set of decoration punches, which they will use to make your own mould. You will have the opportunity to try your hand at using a replica Roman Stick Wheel. Using my replica moulds you will make and decorate your own Samian ware bowl. You will learn about the special properties of Tera Sigillata slip, the coating that gives Samian Ware its beautiful shine.

No previous pottery or archaeological experience is needed. All materials and equipment will be provided, although wearing old clothes and/or bringing along an apron would probably be a good idea. All pots, moulds and tools that you make during the workshop will be fired and returned to you (if your address is outside the UK, there will be an additional postage charge).
