Events Events Frontiers of Roman Writing Thursday 16th March 2023 at 7pm In this lecture Professor Alexander Meyer will discuss the history of Roman writing materials and Vindolanda’s place in that study. He will examine material from the earliest wax tablets in Mesopotamia through the Roman period, to demonstrate the persistence and diversity of media used in the ancient world. This lecture will focus on the finds from Vindolanda and their significance to the study of Roman Britain in particular. Finally, we'll look at the most recent developments in the ongoing research into the tablets, their context and their texts. Professor Meyer has worked with Vindolanda since 2002 and has helped to excavate the site as well as researching the tablets. His longstanding relationship with site gives him the opportunity to place it into the wider context of Roman writing and look at the contributions the research done here has made.
