** Public Notice **

Roman Vindolanda is currently closed to the public due to restrictions which are in place to protect our staff, volunteers and visitors from the COVID-19 virus. We will re-open as soon as we can and the excavations will resume.  Please consider purchasing a ticket in advance online. They are valid for 1 year from the date of purchase and we look forward to seeing you when we re-open. Thank you for the support.

The 2020 Vindolanda Roman Excavations will run Monday to Friday (weather permitting) from Monday 6th April until Friday 18th September. Watch history being uncovered at Europe's most exciting archaeological site.

In 2020 we will be working inside the south western quadrant of the last stone fort, continuing from behind the site of the granaries and heading towards the southern fort wall. This area has never before been subjected to a modern excavation and it is hoped that the archaeological sequence will stretch from the 9th century to the 1st century. In 2020 a focus of the work will be on the end of Roman Vindolanda to the Post-Roman period of the 8th or 9th centuries.

We place our excavation fences as close to the action as we possibly can so you can see our discoveries as we make them.
