Vindolanda Excavations ** Public Notice Updated 11th June 2020** Due to the impact of the COVID-19 virus the volunteer excavation programme has been cancelled during 2020, we look forward to welcoming volunteers back to help us in 2021. Excavation will still be taking place at Vindolanda and this will be undertaken by our Vindolanda site archaeologists only. The 2020 Vindolanda Roman Excavations will run Monday to Friday (weather permitting) from Monday 6th April until Friday 18th September. Watch history being uncovered at Europe's most exciting archaeological site. In 2020 we will be working inside the south western quadrant of the last stone fort, continuing from behind the site of the granaries and heading towards the southern fort wall. This area has never before been subjected to a modern excavation and it is hoped that the archaeological sequence will stretch from the 9th century to the 1st century. In 2020 a focus of the work will be on the end of Roman Vindolanda to the Post-Roman period of the 8th or 9th centuries.
