My 10 year old daughter loves baking and has really indulged this hobby during lockdown. When I have taken both of my children to Vindolanda in the past they have always absolutely loved the replica Roman fort and have spent many moments pretending to be at war with each other there. We all miss our visits to Vindolanda and so me and the children decided to use the Vindolanda fort as our inspiration for a cake design (also a whole lot easier than recreating Roman footwear with sponge cake !).

It was really lovely to spend time thinking about the design and materials of the fort in order to work out how to put the cake together. With a mixture of cake, buttercream, fondant icing, chocolate fingers and chocolate and liquorice ‘turrets’ we cannot wait to tuck in and will be thinking of Vindolanda when we do!
