You don't have to travel far from either the Roman Army Museum or Vindolanda to find the best places to see the Wall itself.  

Walltown Crags, near the Roman Army Museum is one of the most dramatic sections of the Wall as it winds along the top Whin Sill ridge. You may recognise this stretch of Wall if you've seen our award winning film at the Roman Army Museum as it was one of the locations.

Another wonderful stretch of Hadrian's Wall is between Steel Rigg and Housesteads.  This is only 1 mile north of Vindolanda and is also where you will find the site of the Sycamore Gap - a majestic sycamore tree that grew here was made famous in 1991 when it featured in the blockbuster film Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner. Tragically the tree was felled in an act of vandalism in October 2023.

Within the central section of Hadrian's Wall English Heritage manages Birdoswald Roman Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort, Chesters Roman Fort and Corbridge Roman Town. Details of these attractions along with admission prices can be found on the English Heritage website.

Please note: If you are visiting Hadrian's Wall remember DO NOT WALK ON THE WALL. Walking on the Wall damages the ancient monument.
