Vindolanda Trust wins the ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2011’ Silver Award

The Vindolanda Trust’s two sites at Vindolanda, Bardon Mill, and The Roman Army Museum, Greenhead, won a silver award at The North East Tourism 2011 award ceremony held at The Stadium of Light in Sunderland on October 6th.

“This is the first time that the Trust has entered this competition and we are delighted to have gained the silver award. We have seen a fantastic public response to the recent developments at both of our sites. The new museum exhibitions have been widely admired and the return to Vindolanda of some of our famous writing tablets, via a loan from The British Museum, has been a definite highlight. Just last week Vindolanda was included in the Lonely Planet 1000 Ultimate Sights in the Top 10 Greatest Roman Sights section – along with Pompeii and the forum in Rome and Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum have also been shortlisted in the British Guild of Travel Writers Awards which will be announced in November. The new 3D film at The Roman Army Museum has thrilled visitors and has already won a prestigious film award in its own right.

Awards like these are a testament to our Vindolanda team, volunteers, the exhibition designers and film makers but most importantly to the thousands of people who visit our two sites and support the archaeological and heritage work of the Trust. These awards are for all of us to share and enjoy” commented Patricia Birley, Director of the Vindolanda Trust.
