The World Premiere of
The Edge of Empire - The Eagle’s Eye in 3D
The Eagle’s Eye is the first 3D film produced in the North East. It has been produced for the regional charity, The Vindolanda Trust by local film company, Dene Films.
The Trust, that coordinates both The Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda, situated on the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, commissioned the twenty minute film as part of the vast redevelopments occurring at both sites.
The film is housed in a 3D cinema based at The Roman Army Museum at Greenhead. The story is focused on Aquila, a young Roman Soldier, played by up and coming actor Jake Norton and follows the story of a young auxiliary guard and his journey.
The film captures the excitement and realities of Roman army life. Many of the Roman soldiers came from all corners of Europe and the film shows the brutal realities of life at Vindolanda and Hadrian’s Wall – sites that have become so much a part of the region’s culture and heritage.
The film is set to inspire visitors and give a true, exciting, representation of how our regional landscape came to be. The film is part of £6.3million re-developments at The Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda that incorporate a new education centre, state of the art audio visuals and purpose built displays culminating in the return of a selection of The Vindolanda Writing Tablets from the British Museum, treasures that were first excavated at Vindolanda in the early seventies and eighties. The Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda is currently open to the official opening by The Duchess of Northumberland on 19/04/11.
Notes
The Vindolanda Trust is an independent archaeological charitable trust, founded in 1970. The Vindolanda Trust does not receive any annual funding and relies on the visitors to both Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum to fund its archaeological, conservation and education work.
Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum are both situated in the heart of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, Roman Vindolanda is just to the north of the village of Bardon Mill and the Roman Army Museum is next to the village of Greenhead. Roman Vindolanda is one of the most exciting sites along Hadrian’s Wall with its wealth of archaeological remains and ongoing excavations. Our archaeologists will be working on site Monday to Friday each week (weather permitting) from 4th April until 16th September 2011 – so visitors can come along and talk to the archaeologists and watch as the story of Vindolanda continues to be discovered. The Roman Army Museum is an extensive indoor museum which gives a fantastic introduction and insight into the Roman army and the life of a soldier. Both sites are open 7 days a week from 12th March 2011, at 10am until 5pm in March, October and November and until 6pm from April to September until 13th November 2011. For further information visit www.vindolanda.com or telephone 01434 344 277.
