Duchess Drops In For Some Official Business
Tourism in the region received a welcome helping hand from Her Grace the Duchess of Northumberland just in time for East
er.The Duchess lent her support to the official opening of the Vindolanda Trust's two recently refurbished tourist attractions. With the help of money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Regional Development Agency, the well regarded charity has been successful in persuading the British Museum to let the world famous Vindolanda Writing Tablets come home.
Pat Birley, Director at the Trust said “the whole team has been working hard on this project for over two years and this is the culmination of all that intensive effort. Anyone coming today, to either Vindolanda Fort and Museum, or the Roman Army Museum will be blown away by what they find, as we were when we started to excavate the tablets!"
The British Museum and public have voted the Vindolanda Writing Tablets Britian's top treasure and to have them back in the region is fantastic news. Together with the exclusive new 3D film screening at Vindolanda's sister attraction, the Roman Army Museum, the Trust is excited about opening up its doors to even more visitors. Roll on Easter and a busy summer for Hadrian’s Wall and all the businesses along its length.
