Depth of excavation is an important part of what makes Vindolanda such a different and special site. The volunteers from period 3 and 4 have been able to see this with their own eyes, and it is thanks to them that the deepest excavation trench now stands at just over 2 meters depth from the turf level. Vindolanda was occupied by Roman soldiers and their communities for over 320 years. End of Week 1

After the 1st week of excavations, and a few missed days because of the rain, the teams have done extremely well both inside the fort and below the vicus. In the fort the excavations have rolled back another 5metres of turf and have started to uncover the remains of the late 4th century and post-Roman buildings, you can catch up with this work and our other activities on a daily basis through Justin Blakes twitter feed. Countdown to 2014 Excavation at Vindolanda

As I type this blog piece I am acutely aware that there are only 7 weeks until the beginning of the 2014 excavation season at Vindolanda and the countdown is well and truly underway. This week saw the Vindolanda Trust welcome new members of staff to the customer services team and there was intensive training of all staff ahead of the opening of Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum 7 days a week from this Saturday (8th February).
