Romans Return To Vindolanda

We'll be welcoming back the world renowned Ermine Street Guard reenactment group to Roman Vindolanda celebrating 50 years of working together on 17th & 18th August 2024.

There will be:

Roman Army School

Learn how to be a Roman soldier! Get dressed as a Roman soldier, learn a few commands, march in time and complete formations. Cameras at the ready - this is a great photo opportunity.

Displays

Military displays and demonstrations of armour, artillery and technique on the fort site each day.

Roman encampment

See how Roman shoes are made, have a coin minted for you, see some of the tools and kit a Roman soldier would have to carry with him!

2024 Vindolanda Excavations

8th April - 20th September 2024

The archaeologists and their teams of volunteers will be out Mon - Fri weather permitting. We'll be excavating a new area of the site this year. Come see history as it is uncovered. There will be no excavations at Vindolanda in July & August.

2024 Magna Excavations

1st April - 27th September 2024
Roman Magna Fort
At the Roman fort of Magna part of the Roman Army Museum, this year excavations will take place in the far corner of the northern field at Magna, encompassing an area that includes a Hadrian’s Wall Milecastle (46) and exploring the vallum and its diversion.

A beautifully carved sandstone relief which depicts a naked male figure holding a spear stood in front of a horse/donkey has been uncovered during the annual excavations at the Roman fort of Vindolanda near Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland. Read more
